Philo Agora 2015
New days, new place!
7 for 7:30 at 10 Shepherd St, Chippendale NSW 2008. (0457 749 310) Twice a month!
Philo Agora will now be meeting at the Humanist House, 10 Shepherd St, Chippendale NSW 2008. We will meet on the second and fourth Monday of every month. The second Monday will be our normal presentation from a guest speaker whilst the fourth Monday will be a less structured open forum for those just looking to hang out. Don't let the Humanist word worry you, we are still ratbag philosphers. However, this month we have switched the Mondays.
Monday, 27th April. Dr. Peter Bowden as follows:
A REVIEW: Jonathan Haidt, 2013 . The Righteous Mind, Why Good people are divided by politics and Religion, Vintage Books New York
The front cover of this book quotes a New York Times Book Review assessment: “A landmark contribution to humanity’s understanding of itself.”
A copy of the talk has been posted as a prelude to the presentation.
Philo Agora's format is a talk for 20 minutes starting at 7:15 for 7:30. The presenter then answers any questions of clarification from the floor. We then take a break of 10 minutes for more coffee and to mull over the talk and discuss it within small groups. The microphone is then passed around the audience for comment, opinion, and often counter argument to a maximum of 3 minutes. The presenter is then given a 5 minute right of reply. We usually finish up at 9pm. The cover charge is now $5 for the talk. There are tea and coffee facilities available inhouse, and we are diagonally opposite the Broadway Shopping Centre where a quick meal could be had before attendance. There is plenty of street parking in Shepherd Street and surrounds.
We look forward to seeing you on the night.
