Sydney’s Philosophy in the Café - Philo Agora
Every Second Tuesday at 7:30 pm, Fair Trade Coffee Company, 33 Glebe Point Road, Glebe.
Tuesday, April 7, Mary Hendricks The Social Values of the New Energy Era.
Mary coordinates a government program for developing the business skills of young entrepreneurs. Her many interests include kayaking & contemporary thinking about values and society.
Mary will philosophise on the social values emerging from our changing lifestyles - what's in and what's out ; the global face of social change and why emerging nations are aspiring to our 20th century western values.
Our format is a talk relating to a philosopher, philosophy or philosophical theme, for 20 minutes. The presenter then answers any questions of clarification from the floor. We then take a break of 10 minutes for more coffees and to mull over the talk and discuss it within small groups. The microphone is then passed around the audience in turn for comment, opinions, and often counter argument to a maximum of 3 minutes. The presenter is then given a 5 minute right of reply. We are occasionaly asked by a presenter for a longer talk, but we find that a 20 minute talk keeps the presenter focussed on the subject, and with the audience participation, we find the evening usually finishes at 9pm, which is consistent with our commitment to the cafe.
We are constantly looking for presenters, so should you feel that you have a talk within you that's crying for an audience, please respond to this email and we'll get in touch with you.
We look forward to seeing you next fortnight,
Hazel, Peter, Cara & Sam.
