Sydney’s Philosophy in the Café - Philo Agora
Every Second Tuesday at 7:30 pm, Fair Trade Coffee Company, 33 Glebe Point Road, Glebe.
Tuesday, May 5 Sam Alexander on the "The Two Cultures" by C P Snow.
"The Two Cultures" was C P Snow's ground breaking book on the disparity between the two cultures - the sciences on one side and the humanities or art on the other. The book is based on his 1959 Rede Lecture and now includes a companion piece from four years later - A Second Look, in which Snow responds to the controversy created. The crux of his argument is that the lack of communication between the two cultures was a stumbling block to the future of a peaceful world.
Sam Alexander, a founding member of Philo Agora, is well positioned to give this talk; an old PMG technician and Large System Computer Engineer; he also holds degrees in Divinity and Theology. He exists within the dichotomy of technology and religion.
As an alternative to our $6 night that gets you a free coffee or tea, you can head to New York and attend the 50 year anniversary of the subject where the following is advertised on http://www.nyas.org/snc/twocultures/index.asp
We live in a time when more scientists are being trained than ever before, with nearly 30,000 science PhDs awarded in 2006. Yet scientists find themselves frustrated by inaccurate media coverage, poor science education, public science illiteracy, a resurgence of anti-evolutionism, and challenges to scientific expertise on issues like climate change.
In his seminal lecture, "The Two Cultures," delivered on May 7, 1959, the British novelist, physicist, and government science adviser C.P. Snow decried a "gulf of mutual incomprehension between science and the humanities." For Snow, this rift was "a sheer loss to us all."
On May 9, 2009, visionaries, scientists, authors, and the media will join together to explore the persistence of the "two cultures" gap and how it can be overcome.
Don't miss this historic event, with keynote addresses by Pulitzer Prize winner E.O. Wilson, former Congressman John Porter, and Segway inventor and entrepreneur Dean Kamen, as well as panel discussions featuring Kenneth Miller, Ira Flatow, Paula Apsell, Lawrence Krauss, and many more.
