Don, Quixote, July 28, Plus more Agora News.

Sydney’s Philosophy in the Café - Philo Agora.

A fortnightly exchange of ideas on the issues facing ourselves and our world within a philosophical format. A talk of 20 minutes relating to a philosopher, philosophy or philosophical theme.

We meet at the Fair Trade Coffee Company, 33 Glebe Point Road, Glebe, at 7.30pm on alternate Tuesdays.

Tuesday, July 28, Geza Karacsony, Don Quixote.

The knight of the sorrowful countenance - 400 years old and more alive than most of us. If you haven't read Don Quixote and think it's a children's book about a crazy guy  - you don't know what you are missing. To find out, come to Philo Agora on 28 July.

Geza was the co-convener of Philo Cafe, Sydney for a decade - fighting windmills, you could say. Now he has switched personas and lives the life of Sancho Panza, ‘in imitation of Our Lord Don Quixote'.

We are also having a debate on October 20, Atheism will never win the battle with religion.

The debate will ask whether religion or atheism will prevail in capturing everybody's beliefs in the long term.

Ian Bryce,  Sydney's well known proselytizer for atheism and a regular Philo Agora attendee will  lock words  with Peter Bowden, a solid Huxley agnostic, tending to Dawkins, about whether the rational arguments for the non existence of God will ever convince the bulk of ordinary, every day people to switch. Ian says that common sense and intelligence must win.

Bowden says it never will - religion is wired into us, and is so confident, that he has put his arguments in On Line Opinion
http://www.onlineopinion.com.au .

His arguments will be coming out next Wednesday, he dares his opponent - Ian Bryce - to do the same.

"Methinks that they are both tilting at Windmills!", says Sam.

The Annual Philo Agora Award.

The Philo Agora Committee is implementing an award for graduates and post-graduates with a prize of $200. We are puting the finishes touches to the rules. It will be presented to the best paper and presentation from July to June each year. Stay tuned for more details.

Best regards,

Cara, Hazel, Peter and Sam.
