Tuesday, 22 September, Happiness and Philosophy

Sydney’s Philosophy in the Café - Philo Agora.

A fortnightly exchange of ideas on the issues facing ourselves and our world within a philosophical format. A talk relating to a philosopher, philosophy or philosophical theme.

We meet at the Fair Trade Coffee Company, 33 Glebe Point Road, Glebe, at 7.30pm on alternate Tuesdays.

Last Tuesday, Mary Walker presented her talk on "Does it Matter What We Are?" It was well received with a plethora of comments from the floor. If you missed the talk it is published on our web-site, and all are welcome to leave comments.

Tuesday, September 22, Helen Stas, Happiness and Philosophy.

It seems that most, if not all, people wish to live a life which is happy or high in well-being. But what exactly do we mean by these terms? In this discussion, Helen will begin by looking at the three main theories of well-being, and some of the problems these views face. In the second part of the discussion, she will look at empirical studies of well-being, and some of the interesting results which they have provided.

Helen has dual Honours degrees in philosophy and psychology and is in her final PhD year at the University of Sydney. She is adopting an interdisciplinary approach in her research, aiming to show how philosophers and psychologists can work together to provide more complete answers to questions on well-being.

We are actively looking for talks for next year. If you believe you have a talk in you, bursting to get out, simply respond to this email and we will be in touch. Philo Agora is offering a prize of $100 for the best talk and paper that meets Philo Agora’s objective of relating philosophical thought to the question of how we think about and/or act out our lives – individually or collectively. More details on our web-site.

Regards,

The Philo Agora Committee.

Peter, Sam, Hazel & Cara.
