Sydney’s Philosophy in the Café - Philo Agora.
A fortnightly exchange of ideas on the issues facing ourselves and our world within a philosophical format. A talk relating to a philosopher, philosophy or philosophical theme.
November 3, Matt del Nevo discusses Lou Andreas-Salome and Friedreich Nietzsche.
Behind every great man is a woman. This first of a series of three talks is on the influence of Russian born Louise Andreas-Salome (1861-1937). Nietzsche proposed marriage, the great lyric poet Rilke had a life-long love affair, and Freud sought her guidance. Lou Salome wrote 15 novels plus philosophical and psycho-analytical works. With her indifference to moral conventions and insatiable intellectual curiosity, Lou Salome challenged the gender roles of her day.
Each talk - Nietzsche, Rilke, Freud - will be complete in itself, with the last two scheduled for 2010.
Matt was for many years the convenor of Philo Café at Berkelouws books. He is full time faculty lecturer in philosophy at the Catholic Institute and has recently published some of his philosophical thoughts in The Valley Way of the Soul.
