Sydney’s Philosophy in the Café - Philo Agora.
A fortnightly exchange of ideas on the issues facing ourselves and our world within a philosophical format. A talk relating to a philosopher, philosophy or philosophical theme.
Tuesday, November 17, Hazel Popp, Cultural Relativism.
Relativism is the theory that we judge the morality of an action by its cultural acceptance. Anthropologists point to practices considered morally acceptable in some societies but condemned in others, such as infanticide, genocide, polygamy, racism, sexism, and torture. Such differences may lead us to question whether there are any universal moral principles, or that ethical principles are dictated by culture.
Hazel is a hospital scientist, working in Transfusion Medicine. She is a founding member of Philo Agora.
Join us for our countdown to the end of the year.
