Sydney’s Philosophy in the Café - Philo Agora
Every Second Tuesday at 7:30 pm
Fair Trade Coffee Compan, 33 Glebe Point Road, Glebe

Hello Philoagoran,

This Tuesday from 6pm, a number of regulars will be meeting in an informal session. There will be no presentation on the night, but a microphone will be available short we tire of each others company and choose to burst into a chorus of philosophy.

Our first Philo Agora evening will start on Tuesday, 2nd March, 6:30 for 7 at Gleebooks, and then every fortnight then on at the Fair Trade Cafe. It is expected to again be full, so we recommend that all Philo Agora members book early, and announce that they are from Philo Agora for a discount on 9660 2333.

More information can be found on http://www.gleebooks.com.au/default.asp?p=events/events4.htm

The title of her talk - on her new book is Why We Lie: The Source of Our Disasters, by Dorothy Rowe (Fourth Estate). In her previous books Dorothy Rowe has managed to unpick most of the things that bother us in everyday life, from worrying about money to believing in a punitive God. Here she asks why we tell lies and puts the answer down to a mixture of vanity and terror. All pretty toxic, as far as personal relationships are concerned, but Rowe goes further: our failure to tell the truth is behind all manner of ills, from the current economic crisis to global warming. Scary stuff, but Rowe is so wise that you begin to think it might be possible to change.

Also, Philo regular, Tibor Molnar will run an introductory course in the Philosophy of Science, commencing on February 9th. He shall present this course at both the University and the WEA. At the WEA the course consists of 10 meetings on Tuesday afternoons, while at the Uni it will be slightly longer: 12 meetings on Tuesday evenings. Details of each course may be found here: http://www.cce.usyd.edu.au/course/AIPS ; and here: http://www.weasydney.nsw.edu.au/index.php?action=course&course_action=detail&code=01HM055

Kind regards,

Sam, Hazel and Sam.
