Sydney’s Philosophy in the Café - Philo Agora

Every Second Tuesday at 7:30 pm, Fair Trade Coffee Company, 33 Glebe Point Road, Glebe.

March 16th  Derek Maitland:  Reinvention: A Philosophy for a Second Life

For more than a century, it's been the tradition for us to work largely in
one job until retirement, then be politely shoved on to the scrapheap with
a gold watch and the prospect of a fast death through boredom. But life is
different now -- improved health means we're living much longer; "retirement"
can potentially last two, three, or even four decades. Old or young, we need
a philosophy which will help us transform our "senior" years into a challenge
worth looking forward to -- a new life, a second time round. And thus make our lives
far more interesting.

Derek,  journalist and author,  is one of the founding members of Philo Agora

Philo Agora's format is a talk for 20 minutes. The presenter then answers any questions of clarification from the floor. We then take a break of 10 minutes for more coffees and to mull over the talk and discuss it within small groups. The microphone is then passed around the audience in turn for comment, opinions, and often counter argument to a maximum of 3 minutes. The presenter is then given a 5 minute right of reply. We usually finish up at 9pm. The cover charge is $6 for the talk and your first cup of coffee.

Come early from 6pm and join the regulars in a meal before the presentation. There is a slight change in procedure this year. Last orders for meals will be at 7pm with the kitchen closing at 8pm. The usual fare of coffee and cake will be available all evening. Further, the cafe will close from 7pm with only those paying the cover charge allowed entry. We trust this will help streamline both the food and coffee delivery on the night.

Philo Agora's home is the Fair Trade Coffee Company at 33 Glebe Point Road.  This is a coffee house with its own particular ambience offering specialty fairtrade coffee and a relaxing spot to sit around and talk with new friends, both before and after the Philo Agora talks.  It is located close to the Parramatta Road and can be easily reached by public transport.  Take advantage of the free, three hour parking in the Broadway shopping complex.

Regards,

Sam, Hazel and Peter.
